ENGLISH

GRADE 9-11

July 2nd - 24tH

9AM - 4PM

English Language Arts offers students in Grades 9, 10, and 11 an opportunity to earn an English credit through experiential, community, and learning through nature. Grounded in the Ontario English Curriculum, the course develops reading, writing, oral communication, and media literacy skills through authentic, hands-on experiences. Students explore a range of texts, from contemporary Canadian voices to the works of Shakespeare, to examine themes of identity, perspective, and human connection. Learning takes place in both indoor and outdoor settings, where students read, write, and collaborate in meaningful contexts. The culminating task invites students to interpret and creatively present selections from a Shakespeare play, demonstrating a deep and personal understanding of language, story, and performance.

Reading: Discovering Voice Across Time

From poetry, novels and essays to Shakespeare’s plays, students explore how language shapes understanding. Reading outdoors and in community invites a new connection to text, one that blends classical study with personal insight and creativity.

Writing: Finding Your Own Story

Writing is at the heart of the course. Students craft nature journals, reflections, analytical essays, and original works inspired by the themes they encounter in literature and life. They learn to write with clarity, empathy, and purpose.

Discussion:  Exploring Ideas in Community

Conversation drives discovery. Students collaborate in small groups, take part in seminars, dramatic readings, and share perspectives in open dialogue. Together, they build the critical thinking and communication skills that form the foundation of strong English learners and citizens.

Culminating Experience: The Play’s The Thing

For the final project, students interpret and perform selections from a Shakespeare play, not as rote recitation, but as creative reimagining. They might stage a reading in the gazebo, film a short adaptation, or write modern dialogue inspired by Shakespearean themes. The goal: to understand Shakespeare deeply and see his relevance in the rhythms of modern life.
